Bike Coalition to Roll Into Bike Month with Cyclo de Mayo
May 5 event kicks off month-long campaign for biking better
SAN DIEGO, April 20, 2016 – It’s a San Diego twist on National Bike Month – bicicletas of all kinds will pedal for better biking at Cyclo de Mayo on May 5. The San Diego Bike Coalition, the county’s advocate for all people on bikes, is organizing the community event at downtown’s Quartyard to celebrate the power of bicycles to make communities better and kick off a month of bicycle events in San Diego County.

Cyclo de Mayo begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes a short ride that loops through Barrio Logan with friends who raise two wheels and a pint for better cycling across the county during National Bike Month. In true East Village fashion, the casual outdoor party will feature local bike artists and bike shops. Bicycle aficionados will also learn about all of the Bike Coalition’s Bike Month activities (found online here) and have the chance to sign up for iCommute’s countywide Bike to Work Day on May 20.

“National Bike Month is our favorite time of the year to celebrate San Diego’s progress toward making biking better, to fuel up on inspiration to continue advocating for healthier, happier communities all year long,” says Bike Coalition Executive Director Andy Hanshaw. “Cyclo de Mayo kicks of National Bike Month in San Diego County, and we’ve got events slated for almost every day of the month to continue the fun, including Bike to Work Day on May 20.”

Hanshaw says that Bike Month presents the perfect opportunity for folks new to bicycling to learn more and test their legs at bike commuting for the first time. He says that Cyclo de Mayo fosters a welcoming and informational environment to learn more about the types of bicycles for everyday riding, tips on navigating San Diego’s bike paths and streets and how to dress for commuting. The short Cyclo de Mayo ride presents the offers opportunity for new riders to join a supportive, slow group ride and experience the basics of riding on San Diego’s streets first hand.

“We want more people to feel the magic of riding bicycles as a form of everyday commuting,” says Hanshaw. “Cyclo de Mayo and Bike to Work Day are designed to give a safe and encouraging two-wheeled experience to anyone interested in ditching the car for a day.”

No tickets are required for Cyclo de Mayo—just a fun, inviting attitude to enjoy bikes and beers in the company of friends.
