Bike advocates highlight bike safety classes as dockless bikes and scooters get people on the road
The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is offering safety lessons to riders young and old.
The classes come at a time when San Diego has been flooded with new dockless bikes. In the last few years, companies, backed by billions of dollars in venture capital, have rolled out thousands of candy-colored dockless bikes throughout the world, from Hong Kong to downtown San Diego.
The coalition’s next event, geared for younger riders, will be Star Wars themed, called “The Emprie Bikes Back.” It will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Morse High School, 6905 Skyline Drive.
Older riders can become better versed in the rules of the road starting with a classroom lesson at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Qualcomm Building R, 10198 McKellar Court. Then folks can follow up with on-the-road training at 9 a.m. that Saturday, June 9, at the Mira Mesa Recreation Center, 8575 New Salem St.
Bicycle advocates say improving safety couldn’t be more serious.
Last year, 761 people were struck by cars while riding their bikes, resulting in three deaths and 61 severe injurries, according to data from the California Highway Patrol analyzed by UC Berkeley’s Safe Transportation Research and Education Center.
