Here at the Bike Coalition, it’s been a time of transitions and new beginnings: 

• On June 13th, we said goodbye to Daniel Rodriguez, our Digital Marketing Manager. Daniel ran our social media and hosted our Weekly Spoke podcast, and he will be greatly missed. Thanks, Daniel, for your passion and commitment. We wish you the best! 
• This month, I start as the Coalition’s new Executive Director. It’s an exciting, challenging opportunity. 
• Thank you to current and past employees, board members, volunteers, and everyone who has contributed to making the Bike Coalition the influential organization it is today. I am at your service.

Responding to the recent fatality of teenager on an e-bike, the City of Encinitas has declared a local emergency in an effort to create a safer city in which to ride bikes. Importantly, City Engineer Abe Bandegan emphasized the importance of lowering speed limits to create safer streets. Lower speeds reduce fatalities, and increase the reaction time to avoid collisions.

The Encinitas response to this tragedy includes an education and awareness campaign to encourage safer roadway behavior. The Bike Coalition is under contract to the city to provide bicycle safety education, so we will be in the middle of this campaign. We’ll also be watching to ensure any infrastructure changes that are made are state of the practice, and that any enforcement efforts associated with the effort are just and unbiased.

I am very pleased to announce that the Bike Coalition has a new Executive Director. Please allow me to introduce Chloé Lauer. Some of you may already know Chloé from her work as co-founder of Walk n Roll San Diego where she has been actively engaged in bike advocacy.

She also brings 18 years of professional experience in urban planning and design, which includes running her own consulting practice, so she is well prepared to both lead our advocacy campaigns and run the Bike Coalition. 

Throughout the hiring process, I’ve been particularly impressed by the attention to detail mixed with enthusiasm for the job that she brings. The future of the Bike Coalition looks bright under Chloé’s leadership. Please join me in welcoming her to the Bike Coalition.

Register and join others for the 16th annual Bike the Bay ride on Sunday, August 27, 2023! This non-competitive community bike ride is for riders of all abilities and will take you on a scenic, and primarily flat ride, around the San Diego Bay via the Bayshore Bikeway. Along the way, riders will travel through the surrounding cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, and National City before finishing back at the start/finish line at Embarcadero Marina Park in downtown San Diego.

Proceeds from the Bike the Bay ride will benefit the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition.
