Happy Spring from the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition! After a long, rainy winter, we’re looking forward to the most beautiful time of year to ride a bike in San Diego. The hills have turned green, the weather is looking perfect every day, and we have a full schedule of community bike rides planned so you can enjoy our spring the most wonderful way possible– by bike, with friends! Spring is also a time for transition, and we have some big transitions to announce at the Bike Coalition. Last month, our Executive Director, Andy Hanshaw, stepped down after ten years of leading the Bike Coalition to new heights. Now, I am torn to announce that I’ll be leaving the Bike Coalition to take a job with the Massachusetts Audubon Society at the end of April. Over the last year and a half of leading our Advocacy work, I am proud of working with Laura Keenan to found our San Diego Chapter of Families for Safe Streets, supporting countless bikeway projects across the region, and elevating bicycle infrastructure to becoming one of the top budget priorities on the San Diego City Council. We have a long way to go until everyone will be able to feel safe riding a bike for transportation in San Diego, but I know that we’re making progress every day. We will be without an Advocacy Director for the next few months while the Board focuses on the search for a new Executive Director, so we’ll face the challenge of being an advocacy organization without a staff member dedicated to advocacy. That means we’ll need to rely upon our volunteers and board members more than ever. Stay tuned for ways to get involved– we’ll need all of us pedaling together to create a San Diego where everyone can feel safe riding a bike! Read on, pedal on!
