A Note from Executive Director Chloé Lauer

September was a busy month, with the greatest demand for cycling education we have ever seen! We are ramping up our offerings, adding frequency where possible to meet demand and introducing customization where needed to better support our youth.

We celebrated the freedom bicycles provide through our Womxn on Wheels event, hosting 40 people on three rides: a mountain bike ride, a road ride, and a family ride. Next year, we plan to amplify the efforts of local cycling groups, such as She Wolves and partner with them to build a stronger community. Send us your suggestion or reach out if you want to be involved in planning!

Last but not least, I want to thank three incredible people on our extended team: Dorrie Bruggemann, board member and chair of the Outreach & Membership Committee. Her tireless volunteer efforts are so appreciated! Nicole Burgess: San Diego’s best-loved bike advocate and one of our LCI’s - she led the road ride for the Womxn on Wheels event! And Kristine Schindler - the star of Encinitas: she leads most of the City Cycling classes there and even stepped in for a school assembly recently. We couldn’t exist without folks like Dorrie, Nicole, and Kristine. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

Complete Streets Contextual Design Guidance

The Bike Coalition joined other active transportation advocacy organizations and members of Caltrans’ California Walk and Bike Technical Advisory Committee to voice support for the proposed Design Information Bulletin 94: Complete Streets Contextual Design Guidance (DIB-94).

“The standards and guidance provided in this document is exactly the type of progressive leadership we need in California to realize Caltrans’ and CalSTA’s Complete Streets vision, meet its climate action goals, and create a cleaner, safer, more equitable and connected active transportation system for all users.

However, the decision to categorically exclude interchanges from DIB-94 severely diminishes its value and introduces a major barrier to Caltrans’ and CalSTA’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and eliminating traffic deaths. Interchanges are arguably the most dangerous crossings for people on bikes and pedestrians. We strongly urge you to reconsider your decision to exclude interchanges before DIB-94 is approved.”

The Bike Coalition's Chloé Lauer was interviewed for a KPBS story on e-bike safety. The bulk of Lauer’s remarks, which emphasized the importance of culture change, road design and infrastructure improvements, and safety education for all road users, were not included in the final edit.

Climate Action Campaign's Nexus Conference

Chloé was a featured panelist at the Climate Action Campaign’s Nexus Conference at UCSD. She shared the stage with moderator Corinna Contreras, Councilmember Jack Shu, San Diego Housing Federation President Stephen Russell, and IBEW 569 Political Director Cori Schumacher to discuss “People Power: Ballot Initiatives that Deserve Attention.”

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition is offering classes this summer which will teach road rules, where to ride, general bike safety, emergency maneuvers, legal rights and responsibilities and will include a guided road ride to put your new skills into action! Click on the Dates below.

Smart Cycling Session 1 – virtual

October 17th, 6 PM

The Smart Cycling Program is a great opportunity to learn how to ride your bike safely! League-Certified instructors will share their wealth of knowledge and make sure you leave feeling comfortable riding on the road and in traffic.

Smart Cycling Session 2 – Mira Mesa

October 21st, 9 AM

Become a certified Smart Cyclist! This 6 hours on-road course is the 2nd session of our Smart Cycling Course. You must complete session 1 before registering for session 2.

The Street Project screening & panel

October 5th, 6:00 PM @ the Digital Gym

In honor of National Pedestrian Safety Month and National Week without Driving, we invite you to a special screening of The Street Project. This documentary, crafted by the Emmy-winning team at Boyd Productions, sheds light on the global movement to make our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Arrive early to visit the host organizations in the lobby and stay after the screening to hear about the latest efforts to address local issues like those highlighted in the film.

Shoe Drive

Now until Nov. 12th

We are asking for donations of used, no-longer-needed shoes to support Families for Safe Streets San Diego. These empty shoes will visually represent those we’ve lost due to preventable traffic collisions at the World Day of Remembrance Event for Road Traffic Victims on Nov 17th.

All shoes will be donated to charities following the event.
