At the May 9th meeting of the San Diego City Council Budget Committee, Councilmember Raul Campillo advocated for a citywide policy that would require Class IV separated bikeways on all streets above a certain speed limit. Read our statement thanking Councilmember Campillo below:
Dear Councilmember Campillo,
We are writing to thank you for your comments at the May 9th FY23 Budget Review Committee Hearing. You proposed a citywide complete streets policy requiring the Transportation Department to install Class IV separated bikeways or lower speed limits on all roads above a certain speed and volume. We have spent years advocating for a similar policy, and are grateful for your leadership in introducing this proposal into the discourse of the City Council. The Bicycle Coalition recommends that the City of San Diego adopt SANDAG’s Bicycle Facility Selection Tool as an official policy that would require the Transportation Department to install the appropriate bicycle facility whenever a road is resurfaced.
In addition, we fully support your proposal to increase funding for the STAT Team by $1.1 million to expedite filling gaps in the bicycle network. The City of San Diego must prioritize cyclist safety along Vision Zero corridors by installing quick-build infrastructure and reducing speed limits under AB43.
We look forward to working with you and the rest of the San Diego City Council to make San Diego a place where everyone can feel safe riding a bike, no matter their age, background, or ability.
