Reminder for Cyclists: Always stay alert while riding

A recent incident in Carlsbad gained attention when dash-cam footage showed a cyclist colliding with a police motorcycle parked in a bike lane with lights flashing. The cyclist appeared to be traveling at high speed and looking down before the impact. While no serious injuries were reported, the event sparked discussions around cyclist awareness and infrastructure use. After conversations with the Police Chief and City Council members in Carlsbad following the initial CBS8 story, the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition issued the following statement:

The San Diego County Bicycle Coalition now understands that the Carlsbad police department officer and department did not violate any policy, and, as such, this incident serves solely as a reminder for cyclists to be extra aware of their surroundings. Emergencies happen, and even with disabled vehicles in the travel lane for extended periods, there may be no additional warning other than the presence of the officer and flashing lights. Keep your head up, stop for emergency vehicles, and be smart. San Diego County has the potential to be the greatest region in the world for cycling, and with the help of local agencies across the country, we’ll achieve that goal together.
