New League Cycling Instructors in SD

In March, Education Manager Kevin Baross and Operations Manager Jason Vance of the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition hosted a League of American Bicyclists certified League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Seminar with the help of League Certified Coach Rio Oxas and LCI Randy Torres Van Fleck.
The three-day weekend seminar consisted of day and night riding road skills tests, in-class presentations on bike safety, and plenty of team collaboration. Candidates were asked to demonstrate proficiency in cycling and teaching in order to become independent cycling coaches. Many LCIs choose to be 1099 contractors with the Bike Coalition, supporting bike rodeos, bike buses, learn to ride classes, school assemblies, and more. Doesn’t that sound fun? Get paid to teach how to ride!
Who created this certification?
The criteria for becoming a “League Cycling Instructor (LCI)” comes from the League of American Bicyclists. Here’s what the League has to say about the LCI Seminar.
“You don’t have to be an extraordinary athlete or overachieving student to be a stellar LCI, all you need is the conviction that life is better for everyone when more people ride bikes.”
The League has certified more than 7,400 people as League Cycling Instructors. Are you next?
What can you do as an LCI?
Teach classes, run bike rodeos, lead community group rides, and much more!
As an LCI, you can bring bike education and joy to your neighborhood in all kinds of ways!
Why become an LCI?
One of the main benefits to becoming an LCI is to have insurance for all bike related activities with the League of American Bicyclists.
As an instructor, you can be the reason one more person chooses to bike, and bike with confidence.
How can I become an LCI?
The San Diego County Bike Coalition has two certified League Cycling Coaches and will be hosting more seminars in the future. Start with the instructions on becoming an instructor here.
The seminar costs $550 for registration and there are scholarship opportunities available both through the League of American Bicyclists and the Bike Coalition. Employer funded registration is also available at some employers. Contact Kevin Baross at kevin@sdbikecoalition.org to note your interest in the seminar and scholarships.
The Bike Coalition is proud to have added to California’s group of knowledgeable instructors who train all levels of riders how to confidently and effectively cycle for fun, fitness, and transportation.
We hope to see you at the next seminar!
