The Gordy Shields Memorial Ride

Gordon "Gordy" Shields spent 35 years tirelessly pushing for cyclists' rights and working to improve the Bayshore Bikeway, a five-city, 24-mile bike route around San Diego Bay. Cyclo-Vets By his late 60s he was racing professionally, setting national age-group records, and becoming one of San Diego's most beloved cycling advocates. Cyclo-Vets He passed away in 2013 at 95 years old, and a bridge now bears his name.

Every year, riders gather to honor that legacy on the very route he fought to build.

The ride begins at Pepper Park, located at 3299 Tidelands Avenue near the Gordy Shields Bridge in National City. It's a free, fun, conversational-paced 35-mile out-and-back ride along the Bayshore Bikeway to Coronado, and you're welcome to turn around at any point if you'd prefer a shorter distance. SDBC

Start time is 8:30 AM. Cyclo-Vets There will be a short advocacy moment at 8:20 AM before the group rolls out. If you'd like to take the ferry across the bay, bring $7.

This is a community ride in every sense of the word. Whether you knew Gordy personally or are riding in his spirit for the first time, you belong here.
