The San Diego County Grand Jury's report on biking in the City of San Diego found major gaps in the bike network that discourage people from riding, and called for regular bike lane upkeep like clearing debris and filling potholes. At the City Council's Active Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Councilmember Kent Lee said the City's draft response, which partly disputes that finding, came across as defensive. Our Advocacy and Community Manager Ian Hembree pointed out that the City adds bike lanes only when other roadwork is already planned, so closing gaps in the network never becomes the priority. The full City Council must approve the response by November 27, and the Bike Coalition will keep pushing for a connected network built on purpose.
