San Diego County Bicycle Coalition calls on the City of San Diego and SANDAG to take immediate action in addressing recent cyclist fatalities

On Monday, July 26th, 2021, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition and several partner organizations held a press conference at Bird Park in North Park, near where cyclist Laura Shinn was tragically killed a week prior. In 2021, twelve cyclists have needlessly died in San Diego County. Five of those deaths occurred in June and July of 2021.

The Bicycle Coalition, Circulate San Diego, Climate Action Campaign, BikeSD, and other partners demanded that the City of San Diego and SANDAG take immediate action to improve the bicycle network to prevent more serious injuries and deaths. These improvements will help San Diego achieve our Vision Zero goal of zero deaths by 2025 and address our Climate Action Plan’s mode-share goals of increasing bicycle and scooter trips citywide.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria issued a statement Monday in response: “My administration has taken a number of steps to help reach our Vision Zero goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries on our roads, including establishing a new team to create bike lanes more quickly, joining the National Association of City Transportation Officials to learn and adopt best practices, and working with SANDAG to reduce the time it takes to process a bike infrastructure permit by 75%.”
