Coronado Public Schools to Celebrate National Bike to School Day

2,100 children encouraged to pedal to class on May 4

Coronado, CA (May 4, 2016) – Coronado Village Elementary School, Coronado Middle School, Coronado High School and Silver Strand Elementary School will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on May 4, 2016.

Approximately 1,000 students will be riding or walking to school on Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders including Mayor Casey Tanaka.

“Bike to School Day emphasizes the importance of creating safe biking and walking infrastructure, increasing physical activity among children, reducing traffic congestion and more,” says San Diego County Bike Coalition Executive Director Andy Hanshaw. “This is a day that builds connections between families, schools and the community. Plus, it’s just plain fun. Who wouldn’t want to bike to school in beautiful Coronado?”

The event will begin with students, parents and community leaders riding from their homes to school, planning to arrive at school at 7:30 am. Other special activities associated with the event include a raffle with prizes donated from local businesses, such as 400 donut holes donated by Clayton’s Coffee Shop and bike lights from Holland’s Bike Shop.

National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for communities nationwide to collectively bike to school on the same day, building excitement during National Bike Month and turning a national eye to the role bicycle infrastructure and events play in building healthy, happy communities.

The event is organized by The Coronado Unified School District, San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, Circulate San Diego and is an integral part of a two-year Caltrans Safe Routes to School Grant with the City of Coronado.
