What is Free Bikes 4 Kidz?

In 2008 Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) was born as a one-time hobby in a two-car garage. A group of passionate cyclists collected, refurbished, and gave away 250 bikes over a two-week period. Since then that hobby has grown to become the largest organization of its kind in the country.

About the FB4K San Diego

The San Diego Chapter of Free Bikes 4 Kidz will launch in September of 2021. Stay tuned for the bike donation weekend! We hope to collect 500+ bicycles in a single weekend!

In December, 2021 we’ll give away all the refurbished bicycles to local youth around San Diego County with the help of partner organizations like Outdoor Outreach and the Kiwanis Club of Southeastern San Diego.

How can you be a part of this amazing program? Donate bikes, donate funds or volunteer!

Free Bikes 4 Kidz is made possible by the help of hundreds of volunteers! You don’t need to be a professional mechanic to help out!

We have three different volunteer categories for refurbishing the bikes.

Cleaners – Each bike gets a good, thorough cleaning before moving on to the next stage. Just bring yourselves, we’ve got supplies!

Preppers – Take care of the easy stuff, mechanically speaking: Grease seat posts, change tires, swap saddles, new grips, new pedals, etc.

Mechanics – Knowledge and skills required. Change cables, adjust shifting, adjust brakes, true wheels, adjust bearings.

Hands-on not your thing? Want to help in other ways? We need site leads and help with administrative duties. There’s plenty to do and we’ll find a good fit for you. Please email the program organizer for more information.
